Hope Abounds Expands Education Efforts with Help from AT&T.
Wilmington, N.C. — More people throughout eastern North Carolina will soon be learning more about the risks and treatments of cancer, thanks in part to a $1,000 contribution to Hope Abounds from AT&T.
State Rep. Chris Millis recently joined John Lyon, AT&T Regional Director of External Affairs, in presenting the contribution to Executive Director Elizabeth Barnes.
“Hope Abounds provides a lifeline for patients, and families, who often feel like they are adrift in an ocean of fear and uncertainty. I am so appreciative of the difference they are making for individuals and families throughout our community,” Rep. Millis said.
Originally established as Women of Hope to help meet the needs of female cancer survivors, Hope Abounds now also encompasses services for children and teens, providing supportive services, financial assistance, educational opportunities and advocacy for women, children, teens and their families, who are going through any type of cancer from diagnosis to survivorship. The AT&T funds will be used to expand the educational pro-grams, using social media and pod-casting to provide cancer information to a wide audience.
“Due to the overwhelming costs of treating cancer, especially for those under insured, it is important to be able to get this education to our patients and their families,” Barnes said. “Insurance does not pay for the care of the soul, offering encouragement and hope – that is one important benefit we can provide. We appreciate the support of local leaders like Rep. Millis, who cares deeply about those who are dealing with cancer and its aftermath.”
She said Hope Abounds plans to produce and record additional events and programs for viewing free of charge on the Hope Abounds website. Several previous events are currently available at www.hopeabounds.org
“At AT&T, we understand that people who are dealing with health challenges depend on our services to keep them connected to family members, physicians and important information and resources,” Lyon said. “But it is also exciting to be able to assist in other ways that address quality-of-life needs. We appreciate the opportunity to support the initiatives of Hope Abounds and to help them make a difference in the community.
