Is $650 a reasonable fee for 15 up-lights and a spotlight for a wedding reception?
For my upcoming wedding reception, we're thinking of up-lighting in addition to using a spotlight to follow us into the reception hall as we're being introduced to by the DJ. 15 up-lights will be used to color the hall. Is $650 a reasonable fee for the lights? It includes all setup costs. NYC.
Hi,
I am going through a lighting company. My DJ cost will be $500.
Is this part of the DJ costs or extra? Like, are you going through a lighting company?
It really doesn't sound that unreasonable. Here is why.
You have the 15 up lights, they are need to be set up, wired through whatever board they will be running from, They will also take more power than a standard light will. These lights tend to be expensive. Does this cost also cover insurance for damage to the light? If not, you should check it out. Usually they are run with halogen light or another form of expensive light bulb because it is normally theatrical lighting of some sort. These bulbs can burn or break easily, they also only have a limited amount of hours that they can run before needing to be replaced. They are also going to color your hall. This means they will either have a gel or gobo or something in them. Depending on how high tech you get, you can have a colored glass gobo that rotates! This when purchased will run someone several thousands of dollars a piece. Gels are usually about 10 dollars a sheet. They burn quickly though, so will need to be replaced at the end of your wedding. When these lights are wired, the person doing the set up also has to make sure that all of the cables are correctly hidden and covered so they do not become a safety hazard to your guests. It would suck for a guest to trip and fall over a cable on the way to the dance floor!
The spot light itself is a completely different story. It will also have to be run into a board to turn on. It has the same extreme power needs and such of your up lights. Again, set up and tear down for a spotlight isn't exactly easy. They usually year down into about four part with the stand included. The light barrel is EXTREMELY heavy. Depending on how big it is, it could take two people to move, or one very strong person. Whoever is doing your lights will also be either running the spot or the board. They can't do both. You will have a second operator the the other one. Paying someone to run a light board or a spotlight is usually going to cost you at least $20 an hour or more depending.
I hope this helps a little bit. $650 is about average so go ahead. It will be beautiful.
EDIT:
If you are going through a separate lighting company, this is an excellent price! Book NOW! Good luck!
