We Were Looking for Arkansas
We said we were looking for Arkansas,
In the strobe-light sun that popped in our eyes
As we drove on through the dense backyard woods.
In a dilapidated jalopy
With thick crabgrass poking its way up through
The ditched junker's moldy indoor carpet
Like a deserted real-life Chia pet.
In freeways that feel like cruel trespasses.
We said we were looking for Arkansas
In dingy badges boats bites bogs and booze.
In boarded up soda bars,
And washed up football stars,
Both homespun, both well-past their glory days,
Sadly gone back to their original state.
You said you were looking for Arkansas--
Some all-encompassing scene.
It's like you're asking which letter in the
Alphabet is the alphabet.
