My friend's 97' grand prix isn't start, battery is fine?
I had to rescue my friend last night. His 97' grand prix started up just fine, he drove less than 5 miles to the gas station and when he went to start his car again, it wont start. He assumed it was his battery at first. When I got there, all his electronics was working but we tried to eliminate all the obvious possibilities by trying to jump start it, check fluids, ect.
But this is what’s going on. When he turned the key, nothing happens. Just a click. The engine doesn’t make any noise or stutter. Like I said, all his lights are working. I’m thinking it might be the starter but not really sure. We let the people in the gas station know about the problem and just parked it for the night since it was 3AM. So we’re trying to think of a way to at least get it to start to take to a shop, so he doesn’t have to pay for a tow truck. Any ideas what might be wrong?
see if it's the started clicking. also check if it's getting power to run the solenoid. if not, try jumping the control to positive to run the starter. if the starter doesn't run or click, make sure it is getting power from the battery to run it. if so, it's probably a bad starter. pull the starter and bring it to a store like autozone to see if it works. they really don;t know anything about testing them if they are different than their diagrams but it's worth a try. if the starter is bad, order one online as it's cheaper. if you are lucky and the car is a manual transmission, just roll it forward fast and then let the clutch out in second gear and it should start right up. i did this for two weeks with my truck when the starter failed. if i always had someone to push me i would never need a starter. good luck!
