Am I the only one who hates stainless steel appliances, etc?
It seems I'm the only person on earth who doesn't like stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, or granite countertops. I watch all these home shows on tv and everybody goes gaga for these things, I don't get it! Stainless steel to me looks like a hospital. And they SMUDGE constantly. Why would anyone want to live with endless fingerprints?
Hardwood floors, they're hard. And cold. And wood. Why would I not want to sink my feet into plush carpet?
Granite countertops, too unforgiving. You set a plate or a wine glass down a little too hard and it will chip. And once they're marked, its ruined. There's no repair for granite.
Also not crazy about tile. Too slippery when wet and endless fear of mold and dirt in the grout.
But this is just me..
I agree with you about everything, except that I think granite countertops are a suitable replacement for hideous formica. Everyone is into form over function, and these places all look like Vegas showgirls to me. They have no character, and will look as outdated and silly in 10 years as the Brady's kitchen looks now. The smudging on the appliances is a constant pain - they always look dirty and cleaning them is practically impossible - water stains too. These massive stainless steel refrigerators take up huge amounts of energy and have very little sense in how they are configured - they do not hold more food, especially the freezers. They are designed to look good, not to function well. Cold tile and wood floors, especially in these cheaply built mini-mansions that go up overnight, and especially when they are built on a slab, means the floors are constantly like ice and there's no way to warm them. They are like boats - they are giant money pits. And everyone who owns one of these giant homes with all the goofy Restoration Hardware looks can't afford to heat and cool them properly - especially heating in the winter. Their homes are always freezing. Those cathedral ceilings make no sense - they waste heat like crazy and make the noise level in the house intolerable. Nobody thinks this stuff through any more. They just want to have what they see in magazines with no thought to real comfort. It's sad.
