Laser eye surgery asleep?
Is there ANY laser eye surgery that can be performed while the patient is asleep? Preferably one that can fix Astigmatism. Even surgery in it's experimental stages. I have a severe phobia of anything or anyone other than me touching my eyes, so the thought of something basically skinning my eye while I helplessly sit there and watch is out of the question unless I'm asleep. Even if I was able to get past the whole eyeflap thing, I have ADD so staring at a light for 5 minutes would be kind of difficult. Anything at all?
Thanks
The 'way' that laser surgery is performed, is.... you fixate on a target that is within the laser machine. This direction of your eye, places the center of your VISION, not the center of your cornea, in the center of the laser machine. If you were to observe someone else doing this procedure, you'd see two TV monitors. On one you'd have the "real" life image of your eye as you look AT the fixation target. The way the eye sees though, this eye is going to be moving constantly, all the time! This is because the physiology of the retina causes the image to move a few receptors over then up or down or wherever all the time, so the eye is never 'still'. In the other TV monitor you'd see the eye sitting there NOT moving. This is because the laser machine is tracking the eye movement and moving the laser head to follow that movement so that the laser energy is placed EXACTLY in the right place, to the right depth, etc.
So, for you to want to be asleep, you'd end up with some pretty weird results as you'd not know where the center of your vision fixation is "supposed" to be, they'd just have to guess.
My suggestion is that you focus on what they say to do, not your reaction of what they say to do. You can go react when it's over. Choose NOT to react, and you won't. Maybe not all that easy if you are really PHOBIC, but most people are not THAT phobic, they're just really, really not comfortable with things around their eyes....
