Water works great with the right background/bed, but it's horizontal and easily rippled - just shiny surfaces sufficed at some stage, eventually giving rise to today's mirrors with near perfect reflective qualities - but how much more specific can the answer be?

What would have driven mankind to make this kind of thing if we all looked alike? Like a commercial/industrial application, like guiding light/lasers, security for letting light but not prying eyes in - how much does a mirror tie in with other things as a practical and vital solution aside from it's purpose in self awareness/examination...?
