Stage Color Effect

Just prior to a fainting blackout stage I have always noticed visual distortion. Why?
What exactly causes this, why do I perceive colours and shades differently? There seems to be greater contrast between colours e.g. http://www.chilton-computing.org.uk/acl/pngs/bkfig2c5.png
This type of effect.
Has anyone else experienced it. It feels very 'trippy'.
I have noticed that pressing my eyes for 20 secs and releasing the pressure has exactly the same effect...
I would guess that you're fainting because of reduced blood flow to the brain. If theres less blood getting to your brain, theres also less blood getting to your eyes, and the nerves that carry the signal to your brain.
Perhaps the reduction in blood flow is making the nerves less effective at picking up and carrying the signal - the nerves, just like other tissues, need oxygen and glucose found in the blood to function. This is why your hands and feet feel numb when you're cold - less blood goes to the hands and feet, it is conserved for the important organs like the brain.
