What should I know about DMX Stage Lighting?
I did some research on my own and learned the basic concepts, but I much prefer to get advice from people that have practical experience with DMX lights.
I am trying to set up a medium-sized light show that can be pre-programmed and automated. Information on controllers I should use, things I need to be aware of before I buy, and features that I should look for would be greatly appreciated. If you have a website that will tell me everything I need to know, I can work with that, too.
Thank you in advance.
The DMX protocol consists of a stream of data which is sent over a balanced cable system connected between the data transmitter (usually consoles) and a data reciever (could be dimmers or any of the stuff mentioned in the above paragraph).
A single DMX port, outputting this stream, can pass magnitude value information for a maximum 512 channels (or lesser) only. This port is known as a DMX universe.
You need to select a controller based on the number of channel you require. Each light you bought has a determined number of channels. Exemple, a PAR can linked to a dmx dimmer pack require 1 channel. So if you have only 16 par lights, then a 16 channel controller would be enough. If you go with intelligent lighting (ie: scans or moving heads), each one has from 4 to X channels. So lets say I now put 4 scans with my 16 PAR cans, I now need at least 32 channels (4 x 4 + 16).
What is really important is to close your DMX circuit using a terminaison plug. This will filter your DMX signal to ensure the best transmission.
Hope this answers your question!
