Is there a difference between pure blue light and white light that passes through a blue filter?
Would the white light that passes through the blue filter or blue light-bulb coating have the same effect as the blue light that comes from a flame or laser or pure blue light source? By "effect", I mean our eyes seem to react to blue light differently than how they react to green, red or even white light(which contains blue).
They likely seem similar. We may be able tell the difference, but we don't know why upon looking at the blue lights that we can tell the difference.
If we disperse the light and look at its frequency composition, we can tell the difference, and there will be one. The blue filter around a nearly white incandescent bulb will produce a continuous spectrum. A blue laser produces monochromatic blue light. Flames typically produce light in emission bands, with some background continuous spectrum much fainter.
