PAR CAN LIGHTING! HELP! QUESTIONS ABOUT PAR CAN CONTROLLER!?
I bought regular par cans, like the can the bulb and the gel......its the regular one not the led one......well i need to know what i need to do or buy to plug it in to a controller......what time of controller do i need for that type of light. I have about 8 of them.
This is not a dj thing.....i have a small stage for a performing arts school thing and i need to know what type of controller can let me dim certain lights and anything i need to go along with it.
You need 2 things:
A dimmer pack, and a controller. Some manufactures have combined the 2 components into one unit, such as the American DJ products. These are the cheapest and for par cans should work just fine. Any single unit controller dimmer will work, just make sure it has enough dimmers (8 in your case) and can provide the proper Amps for your lights- check your bulbs to figure out the amperage, 1000watt bulbs draw 10amps, 500w draw 5 amps etc.
The drawback to this system is your operator has to be onstage near the lights, not in the back of the auditorium or you have to run alot of cable.
A more pro style system is the separate controller board and dimmer pack, this will also let your system expand if you get more lights. Check out the Leviton/NSI systems- cheap and good.
Again make sure your dimmer pack can handle the amperage, and that the 2 units can communicate with each other. The standard for this is called DMX and is very easy to use.
The costs can vary widely on all of these, check ebay for used products.
My suggestion would be contact Full Compass, www.fullcompass.com. Their salesman can tell exactly which product works best for you over the phone, and for schools they give a pretty hefty educational discount- I used to run a high school performing arts venue and we bought all our gear through them.
