Can I use one of the channels in an XLR audio snake as a DMX line?
I'm the sound and lighting technician at a small concert venue. For one particular one-off show that's coming up, I need to run a DMX line from FOH to the stage, to control some footlights that we're renting. Can I use one of the returns on the audio snake? Or would that be unsafe? Would it introduce distortion into the audio?
There is no other way to connect the footlights to our existing DMX signal chain without buying new cables, and our budget for new cables is nonexistent.
It will work fine - the worst thing that could happen is you might get a bit of interference on your mic lines but that is unlikely. DMX signal are often run on regular XLR mic cables. DMX is a low voltage control signal - it will not damage anything.
My only caution would be to make sure no one mixes up the mic and lighting cables on the snake. If the mic line carries phantom power from the mixer and you plugged your DMX light into that by accident, it might damage the light.
