My rot/mastiff mix has an ear infection and is on vet prescribed medication. I take him out in the yard in the evening to play with a laser light (his favorite toy). There is about 3 inches of snow on the ground right now. After we have been out there about ten minutes he starts shaking his head. When we come in he continues to do so and scratches at it more than he does before we go out. Could the cold be affecting it or possibly making it worse? Also I am cleaning his ears before I put the medicine in them.
Yes, the cold will irritate a dog that has an ear infection. The ear canal is inflammed, and when the cold gets to it, the tiny blood vessels constrict. This is why he is shaking his head, because it feels funny. You are treating them, which is a good thing. Just keep doing what you are doing.
