Need help with a chemistry question about fireworks!?
In fireworks, why do metal flakes create a "strobing twinkle" effect while metal powders create a quick "photo-flash" effect?
Either this is a really, really weird coincidence, or you go to my school and have chemistry right now and are doing the same annoying postlab as me. If so, HI! Who are you, and isn't chemistry at allied really irritating? otherwise, sorry for sounding like a creeper.
I have been looking for this question all weekend, and I think that I might have found the answer. One website tells me this fact:
Finer metal powders react more quickly than coarse powders or flakes.
So, If you ever saw fireworks and saw the kind that twinkle, you obviously see that twinkling effect for much longer than other fireworks that just seem like a quick flash of light. Because the photo flash is made from powders and they react more quickly than the flakes, that explains why you see a "quick photo flash."
Since metal flakes create the strobing twinkle effect and metal flakes take slower to react than powders, that explains why you see that strobing twinkle for much longer than that of the quick photo flash.
I am not absolutely sure, but hopefully my logic sort of makes sense to you. these postlab questions are really, really hard so don't worry i am desperate with a postlab too.
