Effect Stage Strobe

What is this photographic technique called?
The subject performs an action and each exposure is set at intervals. Instead of a long continuous exposure where the subject is blurred, it shows different intervals of that action all on one still. I remember watching the Beijing Olympics diving events and they would display a single still photo that showed each stage of their dive. I remember the announcers referring it to as a "strobe effect" photo, but I've been searching the web and haven't found anything under that name.

its called stromotion - when done right its done by using strobes/flash, now it seems to be done on photoshop using multiple images and they look crap compared to real ones
they connect a camera to a spliter box that fires different flashes at intervals
the camera has a LONG exposure (slow shutter speed - slow enough that its open while the action is in the frame) and the indivual flashes freeze the action on film or sensor as they fire and the person runs/jumps through the frame
if you have three of more flash units and some assistants you can do it by being somewhere dark, keeping the shutter open and firing the flashes as the person walks/runs through the image
american english - flash = strobe, so its done in the same exposure using flash, as long as the background is far enough away and the flash doesnt reach it the image will work
