What's the name of the light bulb that turns very bright yellow and makes everything in a room look colorless?
I believe this kind of light is used in special effects stage lighting. I recall that it takes about 20 minutes to warm up; but once warmed the bulb itself turns very bright yellow; and so long as there are no other light sources everything in the room looks like it is greyscale.
I think that he/she might be referring to a Sodium Vapor lamp.
I had one in a Thomas safelight (well, still do actually) and it does take about 20 minutes to warm up, is very bright when fully warmed up, and does tend to mute color reception so that one might think the room and everything in it was grayscale. Actually, it would be more proper to call it "yellowscale."
It is a great safelight as photo paper is least sensitive to the lamps wavelength while our eyes are most sensitive to it.
And, that is probably the reason that color is de-emphasized when looking at object lit by it - we don't tend to see any other color but the very bright yellow-orange of the lamp.
I like a darkroom that I can read in! I can with this lamp.
