Dmx Wash Lights

What DJ lights are most useful?
My friend and I are beginner DJs and are looking into getting some new lights. I was looking into the Chauvet Colorstrip, which I hear is good for beginners because it has about 20 settings to choose from without using a manual DMX controller. It seems like this is the best for wash lighting, but how about effects? Should we get lasers, strobes, etc? I'm trying to keep it around $300, and the colorstrip is $200, so is it worth it? And what else should I get?
Ok, the best advice in lighting I can give is don't buy things that will be useless in the future. If you are serious you will want to use lighting in DMX in the future. That being said you will also want to stay with LED as it will save you a fortune in bulbs in the future.
Unfortunatly there are not many good effects lights that are LED, DMX, and $100 or less.
I would get the wash and an effect like:
