Do you have to reprogram DMX light addresses when setup after the first time?
Also, how long do scenes operate or is it a loop? I'm looking into getting into DMX and any info. would help....i.e. good cheap setups, lights and controllers. Thanks
A lot of DMX fixtures use dip-switches. This means there there's a series of 9 little switches on the back that are used to determine the fixture's DMX address. Unless something hits those switches, they aren't going to change.
There are also fixtures that use a LCD display, in which case after the address is chosen, they store that information even when they are unplugged. Basically what I'm saying is no, you don't have to readdress them every time they are set up.
Now for "cheap" set-ups...DMX is not cheap. There are certain companies that are better "value" companies such as American DJ and Chauvet. They don't cost as much, but they don't have as much functionality in return. However, they are usually alright for DJ's.
I personally have an Eliminator DMX DJ with 2 Chauvet LEDsplash 152B's, and 2 Chauvet Intimidator 1.2's. All together it's about $600 worth of equipment and a pretty good basic set up. Though I didn't include the price of the tripod stand, the DMX cables, the DMX terminator, or any other small accessories you might need. You will definitely need a bit of a budget to get you through buying DMX equipment.
