The Mystic Bright Fringes, the hippie disco band, is holding its thirty-year reunion concert at the Hollywood?
The Mystic Bright Fringes, the hippie disco band, is holding its thirty-year reunion concert at the Hollywood Bowl. The show opens with the stage dark except for a giant rotating mirrored disco ball, 2.43 m in diameter, illuminated by a laser beam shining through a pinhole aperture from the far back of the open amphitheater, 325 m away. The laser uses light of wavelength 671 nm and has an adjustable aperture. What should the diameter of the laser aperture be so that the central bright spot of the laser's diffraction pattern just covers the disco ball?
Please Help!
First, you need to find theta. so use arc sin(2.43/325)
Once you have your angle use sin (.4284)= 1.22(671e^-9/d)
divide by 1.22 on both sides. .00613=(671e^-9/d)
Divide by the wave length 9135.62=(1/d)
Solve for d. 1.09e-4=d
This is the tricky part. The aperture needs to twice as large because this will only cover half of the ball.
2.19e-4 should be your answer.
Took all of my subs to get that one.
