External monitor on a laptop?
The screen on my wife's Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop has gone black, but it boots normally, and when I shine a bright light at the screen I can make out the desktop and icons, so it's a problem with the backlight. Unfortunately, fixing it may take some time, and she needs the computer now. So we tried connecting an external monitor so she could work.
When we first boot up the machine, the external monitor lights up with her desktop background, but all the icons are on the dark screen. I managed to open up the Display Settings window and drag it onto the working screen, but when I then tell the system to make the external monitor into the Primary monitor (so program windows will open on the working screen) the external monitor just goes black and the LED indicates "No Signal" and the Display Settings control panel indicates the monitor is disabled. (I've gone through this twice.)
The monitor works fine when connected to my desktop.
So how do I make the monitor into the Primary?
Generally - if you power the laptop up with the external monitor connected and powered on - it will default to being the single monitor.
Dells usually have a key combination of FN + F8 to toggle display options. Try this key combingation or FN + whatever key says CRT/LCD in blue to toggle the display.
The backlight might be out - OR it might just be the switch that tells the laptop that it's open and to power up the backlight (usually on top of the laptop above the keyboard right where it meets the display) - Might clean this switch up and prod it with a paperclip or something to see if it is stuck.
Best of luck.
