How long can a beam of light (say, from our sun) travel in a vacuum before it comes to a halt?
...obviously leaving aside any effects of, say, passing through other planet's atmospheres, space particles etc.

It may get dimmer, but that is from the spreading of the light. The photons will travel until they collide with something.
